UEM Sunrise Celebrates World Nature Conservation Day Through the “Waste to Wonder" Programme

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 August 2024 – UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise” or the “Company”) recently collaborated with Social Enterprises - business entities incorporated under the Ministry of Entrepreneur & Cooperative Development (MECD), to create positive social and environmental impacts through the highly engaging “Waste to Wonder” community programme.

The programme, comprising two series of events, aimed to promote sustainable waste management practices and environmental conservation through creative approaches, as well as raising awareness on the importance of preserving natural resources and ecosystems. Programme was curated in line with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG-12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG-13 (Climate Action).

The first event kicked off on 24 July 2024 in Kiara Bay with “Know-Your-Edibles”, a collaboration under Social Enterprise’s Knowledge New Old Twists (KNOTs) with two of the Company’s PINTAR-adopted schools, i.e. SK Rinching Hilir and SK Bangi. Students aged 10 to 12 years old, participated in an outdoor and experiential learning on planting and composting techniques, also ways to maintain an edible garden. Through this event, we greatly encourage sustainable habits and environmental stewardship among the young participants.

“Waste to Wonder Hunt”, the second event then took place on 28 July 2024 at Publika Shopping Gallery. Social Enterprise partners namely Hara Makers, KITARAN, Kitarefill, Refiller Mobile, Luzou, and the Company’s own SIREH Park, gathered to share knowledge on sustainable activities including demonstrations on converting waste into valuable resources. The participants, enlightened and excited about the activities, were also rewarded with edible garden products by Eats, Shoots & Roots to grow food in their own homes. “

We are thrilled to partner with the Social Enterprises in this initiative, providing us opportunity to educate the community about transforming waste into reusable items, whilst enhancing the value of existing products. Such efforts are essential for the preservation of our natural environment”, said Emir Bustami, Co-Founder of KITARAN.

UEM Sunrise’s Chief Executive Officer, Sufian Abdullah remarked, “This dedication reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility, in line with the Company’s ESG initiatives. We strive to cultivate a culture of sustainability at a very young age and believe that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to the greater cause of nature conservation that further makes a positive impact to the communities we serve.”
